History
There have been 31 State Tournaments and I
have attended at least 1 match for the last 26 years. I have taken
lots of pictures at these tournaments and I am going to share some of
the memorable moments with you.
2005
Video Order Form - OHSAA
Sanctioned Official Videos of the State Volleyball Matches. I
ordered the 2002 Div I final and I am pleased with the quality.
If you missed out on the matches, then I would highly recommend the Div I
final of Cin Seton and Tol St Ursula. (I have no affiliation with TigerVision Digital
Productions.)

State Tournament Dynasties
| Newark Catholic |
They won 5 titles in 6 years from 1979-1984. In 1981,
they had an 88 match win streak broken in the Semis by Archbold. The
team went 174-7 in this 6 year stretch. They ran a simple 4-2
offense the 1st 3 years, kept the ball in play and played incredible
defense. The last 3 years they got quite a few transfers from
Lakewood and Heath and played a faster 6-2 offense with a much more
aggressive terminal game. |
| Cincinnati Seton |
The Saints made it to 7 straight state tournaments
starting in 1983. They won 4 titles in 5 years from
1984. In 1987, they had an 102 match winning streak broken in
the Semis by a sophomore led Reynoldsburg team. |
| Springfield Northwestern |
They won 4 titles in 5 years starting in 1983.
They did not make it to the state tourney in 1985. Each pair
of victories were led by good 5-1 setters and strong middle hitters. |
| Akron Hoban |
They made it to the state tourney 5 times in 6
years. Runnerup in 87, 88 and champs 90 - 92. |
| Cincinnati St. Ursula Academy |
Dominated Division II for 6 straight titles from
1993-1998. They only lost one 15-13 game in their 12 straight
tourney wins. They were 151 - 18 during this 6 year stretch. They
are back. Winning Division I championships in 2001, Runner-up in
2002 and State and National Champions in 2003. They were 81-5 over
this 3 year stretch, including 29-0 in 2003. |
| Hopewell Loudon |
They made it to the state tourney
for 8 years between 1994-2001. They were 216-12 over that stretch. Seven of
those losses have been to St. Henry and only 3 of the losses have
occurred to teams that did not win state titles in that same year.
They won 5 championships in a row from 1997-2001. |
| Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame |
They won their 1st title in 1995. A new
coach, Donna Mechley, comes in and they have won 3 titles from
1998-2000. That ties the big school record from Cincinnati Seton
in the 80's. Another one in 2006. |

Most Dominant Teams
| 1981 Stow |
This team went 30-0 and did not lose a game the
whole year. They beat a 29-0 Perrysburg team in the final. Lisa
Bettio, who later went on to star at Ohio State, dominated at the
net. |
| 2003 Cin St. Ursula Academy |
Simply the best High School team
that I have seen. This team went
29-0 and only lost 2 games all year. They had a great setter
in Bryn Kehoe, who had a tenacious will to win, and the balanced
hitting of Beth Gillming, Beth Shelton and Maggie Schmelzle. They
beat 2 other great Ohio teams in Cin Ursuline and Toledo St Ursula
Academy a total of 5 times. |
Best Matches
| Archbold over Newark Catholic 1981 Semis
15-13,7-15,15-13 |
Both teams were undefeated and NC had beaten Archbold
fairly easily in the last 2 finals. NC had 4 Sr. starters who had
only lost 1 match in their career, a district final as freshmen.
Archbold was led by the strong net play of Senior Kim Bosco. |
| Cincinnati Seton over Reynoldsburg 1988 Final
15-11,13-15,16-14 |
Reynoldsburg was unbeaten
including a 15-9,15-7 win over Seton, and had only lost 3 games during the year. |
| Buckeye Trail over Fairview Park 1989 Semis
16-14,12-15,15-13 |
Fairview Park had won the title in 88. They only
had one starter back from that unbeaten team. Buckeye Trail was
undefeated and had not lost any games for the season |
| Norwalk St Paul over Marion
Local 2002 Final
9-15,15-13,15-13 |
Norwalk St Paul lost their first
game of the year in the final. They rose to the occasion to win
their first state title in an excellently played match. Seniors
Angie Camp and Jordan Centers led them down the stretch. |
| Cincinnati Ursuline Academy over
Cincinnati St Ursula Academy 2002 Final
11-15,15-8,15-13 |
St Ursula came in as the
defending champs, over Ursuline in 3 for the 2001 final, sporting a
26-1 record that included wins over Louisville Assumption and two
top Chicago teams from their Mizuno Cup Championship. Oh, they also
had beat Ursuline twice in three game matches that could have gone
either way. This was one of the best high school matches that I have
ever seen. |
